Some rescues find you before you ever think to look for them.
It started as a normal day — just the boyfriend and I checking out a rental house. But as we pulled away from the quiet little neighborhood, something hopped right into our story: a tan bunny, bouncing freely across the front lawns like he owned the block.
Now, anyone familiar with wild rabbits knows they don’t usually come in sandy beige. This little guy stood out like a sore paw — especially in an area crawling with stray cats, loose dogs, and natural predators. It didn’t take long to realize: this was no wild rabbit. He was lost… or worse, dumped.
We asked around the neighborhood, but no one knew where he belonged. A few kind folks had seen him lingering for a couple weeks but had no luck getting close. And so began our unofficial mission: rescue the bunny.
The boyfriend headed off on a supply run and came back with bananas, lettuce, and a humane trap. Our trap, however, had other plans — or rather, Chuck the groundhog did. Not only did Chuck escape the first time, but he also broke the trap in the process. Yet somehow, the neighborhood legend wandered back and got himself caught again (Chuck clearly had mixed feelings about us). We gently rehomed him to a wooded park by the river, where he could groundhog in peace and leave the neighborhood gardens alone.
Back on bunny watch, we were checking the trap one morning when a neighbor called out. He had also been trying to catch our mystery hopper — and he succeeded!
That’s how the tan little fugitive finally came home with us.
He was spooked, of course. Relocating from the wild world of suburban lawns to a safe, quiet home takes some adjustment. But soon, with soft words and gentle care, he began to settle. He ate, he drank, and he even started flopping around like he belonged.
We named him Mowgli Phillip, because clearly, he’d been living his best Jungle Book life before we scooped him up. A few ticks were treated, and the vet gave him a clean bill of health — just a little underweight, but nothing a few extra snacks and snuggles couldn’t fix.
He’s not quite ready to meet our other bunny yet, but with time, love, and maybe a bit of matchmaking magic, we think he’ll make a perfect addition to the PurrScent crew.
Because sometimes the best gifts don’t show up in boxes or bags — they hop across your path when you least expect it. 💛
